I've always suspected that the Viking longhouses were very much like the cedar longhouses in which the Haida and other native non-Inuit people on the edge of the upper left-hand corner of North America. In both cultures storytellers were at a premium and those long winter nights spent around the fire led the the re-telling of much of the oral history, mythic of otherwise.
