Pagans and Unitarians

I have been an interested bystander watching the trend of Pagans joining Unitarian congregations. One group, it seemed to me, had nice buildings but less "juice." One group was just the opposite.

But I knew there were tensions. Jason Pitzl-Waters rounds up some of them.

Go read his post, and I will go back to grading student papers.

This is an easy trend to have foreseen. A great lot if not most pagans come from a Christian background, so it's kind of natural they would be inclined to gravitate toward something reminiscent of a "church" environment, though admitedly Unitarians are not exactly what you would consider a "traditional" church.

Still, they fit the bill as far as providing a haven of sorts for legitimate congregational activity, and answers the need of people that have been limited up to now to participation in "pagan pride" events.

I don't have a problem with it, though by the same token I don't think pagans should feel obliged to limit themselves to any one outlet.

Personally, I'm fine with the idea of the secret covens, I guess I just have a traidtionalist streak in me. Plus, I want to keep the romance and mystery alive. If we become just another religion-just another "church"-that seems to me to defeat the whole purpose."Do what thou will". For me, I say no to hierarchical religous organizations and bureaucracy. If anybody else wants to go that route, that's on them. Give me that old time religion-the secret society of brothers and sisters.

It's pretty funny to read about this kafuffle since I no longer have any responsibility to resolve it. Having served at and preached at a number of UU churches and fellowships, I can assure you that every bunch is different from the others but every bunch struggles to perpetuate what they feel is the "norm." I'm afraid that "tolerance" too often turns to "disinterest." I've always said that at UU coffee hour, if you introduced yourself as a cannibal, the most likely response would be, "How interesting! Have you met George? He's a vegetarian." Not really listening, you know. Better that way.
